Your Model Not Included?
The recently settled class action lawsuit was for 304 defective refrigerator models from
the Bloomington, Indiana plant. We are well aware that there are more than
just these 304 models that are defective. Furthermore, the 2001 and 2002
production years from the Bloomington plant are involved. In addition, defects continue to exhibit into the 2003 and 2004 models and also appear in
models manufactured in the Celaya, Mexico plant.
The recently filed Kitchener v General Electric and Martines v General Electric
class action suits may address these additional models.
1999 - 2000 Models
Due to the new Department of Energy
requirements, changes in manufacturing actually began in mid 1999. For
example, in a GE Flash (technical bulletin to authorized appliance repair
technicians) they describe the following:
GE Flash 2001 Fridge Evaporator Kits EVAPORATOR KITS REF 24-01 WR85X10022 AND WR85X10023 NOVEMBER 2001,
SIDE-BY-SIDE EVAPORATOR REPLACEMENT KITS WR85X10022 AND WR85X10023. In
the past, evaporators in side-by-side refrigerators had 42 passes and were
approximately 30" in height. Starting in 2001, a smaller evaporator
was introduced in production that has 32 passes and is approximately 22" in
height. In addition, prior to the middle of 1999, two defrost heaters
were used on the evaporator. After mid 1999, a single defrost heater
was introduced.
GE made a design change decision (mistake) in mid 1999 to install one
(instead of two) defrost heaters and reduced the size of the evaporator. As a result, many of you paid to have a GE Technician come to your home to
install the second defrost heater (in the existing compartment already designed
to hold two heaters) that should have been there in the first place.
Customers paid for the correction of this mistake.
Rusted Augers
One of the most widely reported complaints we have received - regardless of
model or year - is the rusted augers inside the ice buckets. A poor
quality steel was used to make the spiral metal auger resulting in iron oxide
(rust) particles dispensing with ice. Countless people have
reported replacing the auger or ice maker only to have the
replacement rust as well.
If you fit into any of the categories on this page, please provide your
information on our Contact page. It is through your communications to us
that we better understand (and are able to prove) how wide-spread defects are
throughout the GE product line. It was because of communications to this
web site that we were able to document and prove that the defects in the 22
cubic foot models also extended into 20 and 25 cubic foot models. As a
result, the Settlement was expanded to include these models. |
